Dedicated vs Shared IP Address

Decide if your site needs a dedicated IP address

Should your Site Have a Dedicated IP Address?

Dedicated IP addresses are necessary if you want to accept online payments, if you need to set up a Private SSL Certificate, and if you want to look cool ;) What is the difference between Shared IP and Dedicated IP?

  • Shared IP : An IP Address that is associated with every website hosting on a shared server - all websites on that server share the same IP address. Most websites on the internet are hosted on shared IP addresses. This is why the "Shared SSL" that is included with all our hosting plans requires you to add your user name after it, in order to establish a secure socket layer connection to your web pages. This is obviously not considered a high level of security, but is better than not having any at all.
  • Dedicated IP : Domain-specific IP address - this is not shared with other accounts on a shared server, and is only used by your website alone. Does my website need a Dedicated IP?

Dedicated IP addresses are recommended for large websites, ecommerce websites that require a secure connection in order to process payments or if you plan to collect sensitive information that should not be compromised or intercepted by a third party.

What are the benefits of having a Dedicated IP?

  • Required for installing Private SSL Certificates on any shared server
  • Custom DNS (Domain Name Servers)
  • Anonymous FTP Connections
  • Avoid any possibility of getting your website banned from search engines*

* It is rumored that some search engines are using IP Banning to decrease Spam, similar to the IP Banning function available in your hosting control panel. When you ban an IP address that is shared, you are banning ALL the websites hosted on that server as well. In short, if a website on your shared server is banned for any reason, yours will be too! Get Your Own Dedicated IP Address
